Mignow wins first place at the SAP INNOVATION AWARDS 2022 with the Carrefour case study
The SAP Innovation Awards 2022 is an SAP award program that honors and celebrates the achievements of forward-thinking companies and individuals who have leveraged the power of SAP's latest products and technologies to revolutionize industries, help the world run better, and improve people's lives.
The judges selected the 25 winners from hundreds of inspiring innovation stories, including major market players and incredible participants. MIGNOW WON THE CATEGORY “Digital Transformation on Rise with SAP” with the Carrefour case study.
Excuse us, world, we've just won the Oscar of our segment, so brace yourselves!
But what did we do that was so incredible to win such a coveted award? Essentially, we delivered the complete digital transformation of Brazil's largest retailer using Rise With SAP, which consequently resulted in:
- 30% reduction in system operating costs (using SAP BTP).
- 45% reduction in Carrefour's energy consumption through cloud hosting.
- In addition to an increase in end-user productivity by up to 64% with the new Fiori interfaces.

We could end this article here, as "just that" was enough to put MIGNOW on the global radar, but let's talk a bit more about this #BIG project.
First, let's contextualize Carrefour's market position, which needs no introduction but deserves special mention.
Carrefour is a French group and a leading global retailer. With over 321,000 employees worldwide, a turnover of nearly 80.7 billion euros in 2019, more than half of which was generated outside France, Carrefour today has 12,225 stores in over 30 countries.
For 60 years, they have been pioneers in large-scale food retail, continuing their mission to make their products accessible to everyone. As a result, Carrefour reaches approximately 104 million households annually worldwide and receives 1.3 million unique visits across all its shopping websites every day.
From SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA on RISE
The biggest challenge:
To update the ERP and migrate the environment to the cloud within the proposed short timeframe, thereby improving Carrefour's business operations. Timing was a decisive factor in this project!
For many retail companies, a project of this size typically takes a year to complete, due to the significant complexity involved in integrating with other systems.
“The concern about Black Friday approaching made the migration even more challenging, because if there was any delay in project delivery, the current data center would have to be shut down. In other words, the company would increase its costs for the November demand, when Black Friday takes place,” comments Paulo Henrique Farroco, CIO of Carrefour Brazil.
The project's main objective:
To migrate the current SAP environment, hosted on IBM-CMS 'on-premise', to a SAP Cloud SaaS environment (RISE with SAP S/4HANA) within 3.5 months.
To update the integration architecture using new Middleware in the new SAP environment. And to upgrade SAP S/4HANA 1511 Enterprise Resource Planning to version 2020, the most current version available from SAP.
The proposed solution:
Migrate SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA on RISE and move several other on-premise products to the cloud.
Achieved result:
The new ERP covers all Carrefour processes, from origination, risk management, and logistics, through back-office processes (financial, accounting, and tax) to operational processes. Furthermore, the migration enables stores to forecast product purchase quantities (increase or decrease). With greater robustness and rapid sales order analysis through SAP S/4HANA, the retailer anticipates an increase in company profitability.
“Within 3.5 months, we successfully migrated our SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA and began implementing improvements in our operations. With SAP S/4HANA, we are able to deliver and enhance various new functionalities and technologies to our business.” Carrefour.
Additionally, the benefits package can be scaled by segment, as shown below.
Business or Social:
- Increased sales and buyer engagement with personalized offers, following the development of a recommendation engine.
- 45% reduction in energy consumption by migrating from on-premise data centers to the cloud.
- Reduced service disruption for shoppers or employees, with migration between on-premise applications.
IT
- By migrating to Google Cloud, we achieved a 30% reduction in operating costs.
- Accelerated release processes, new technologies, and processes.
Human Empowerment
- Increased productivity – Fiori interfaces are easier to use than previous SAP UIs, allowing for more productive work. With simpler menus and tiles, as well as fewer clicks, Fiori can reduce time spent on tasks by up to 64%.
- More intuitive workflow – Fiori-designed UIs present business logic instead of SAP logic. This makes them more intuitive for the vast majority of information workers.
- Enhanced mobility - With its mouse and keyboard structure, SAP GUI was not suitable for mobile use. The shift to Fiori offers advantages for employees' mobile devices. Fiori's simple interface allows users to work with touchscreens. The consistent UI behavior and design provide a similar experience regardless of the device, saving substantial time on activities performed.
We achieved the following:
40% Reduction in operational costs.
5x Faster deployment of new functionality.
30% More agility in enabling the end-user.
“By moving to the cloud, we were able to reduce our operational costs by 30%, and that's just the beginning. As we continue to implement best practices and adapt our operations to the cloud, we will be able to further reduce our costs in the future.” Carrefour.
Why MIGNOW?
Mignow was the organization chosen for the project implementation because it was the most innovative option on the market, where all steps of the SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA migration are performed automatically via software. Using artificial intelligence tools, it understands the database, diagnoses the project, automates conversion steps, and performs automatic updates.
Carrefour, in partnership with SAP Brazil and MIGNOW, a technology company specializing in SAP S/4HANA Upgrades, completed the migration to a new data center and structural connectivity services. The highly complex project was completed in a record time of just three months. With the implementation, Carrefour gained new functionalities, agility, and improvements in the execution of the company's processes.
JUST INCREDIBLE! 🏆
We are grateful to everyone who made this project a SUCCESS and helped us make the SAP Innovation Awards 2022 victory possible.
